The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) withdrew a proposed rule for the Automated Driving System-Equipped Vehicle Safety, Transparency, and Evaluation Program (AV STEP). This program would have been voluntary for vehicle manufacturers, developers of automated driving systems, and fleet operators. The withdrawal is effective as of June 26, 2026. The decision follows a reevaluation of the proposal and comments received.
Vehicle manufacturers and developers of automated driving systems will not need to comply with the proposed program. They can continue with existing regulations without the added requirements of AV STEP.
